Cuba After Castro: What Lies Ahead?

Cuban leader Fidel Castro says he will not seek re-election and has resigned as Cuba's president, after 49 years in power.

Castro announced in Cuba's state-run newspaper that he is stepping down. At 81, he has been ailing and has not appeared in public in the past year and a half.

When the Cuban parliament meets Sunday, Castro said, he will neither seek nor accept a new term as president.

Despite its historical importance, Castro's announcement did not come as a complete surprise. When Cuba's parliament convenes this weekend, it would have had either to re-elect Castro or choose a new president.

Cuba held elections last month for a new National Assembly; the new legislature meets for the first time on Sunday. Their first order of business is to elect an Council of State and a president.

Even the state bureaucracy remains at the beck and call of Dal leaders than the BJP ministers and MLAs. We have no forum, but our own party high command to give vent to our hurt, adds a leader of the BJP.

The BJP leaders maintain that their criticism by the Dal leaders for playing the Congress card or not supporting Punjab demands was absurd and baseless as it was the NDA government which always went out of the way to accommodate SAD leaders.

All meetings between the SAD and the BJP leadership are always held in cordial atmosphere, says Harcharan Bains, holding that most of the issues are discussed threadbare and resolved at these meetings. The alliance has stood the test of time.

Permanent makeup lures some to needle

No one said looking good is supposed to be painless.

That maxim rang especially true as Julie Wallace leaned over to tattoo the outline of Nancy Wallace's lips with ink the color of Jamaican Rum.

It was quiet inside A Perfect Line Academy of Permanent Cosmetics, except for the soft hum of Wallace's permanent makeup pen.

Wallace, 29, used one gloved hand to steady the lip, while the other lowered the tool's needle to blend the color in.

Then she pulled back.

"You've got color!" Wallace said to the patient — who happened to be her mother. Cathy Klemz peered in for a closer look.

"It doesn't look clowny at all," said Klemz, a permanent makeup technician and trainer. "It looks nice and very natural."

The process of getting one's lips outlined typically takes as long as twohours and plenty of topical cream to numb the pain.

Boiling water spikes bisphenol A levels

Adding boiling water to polycarbonate plastic bottles causes a dramatic spike in the amount of bisphenol A, or BPA, leaching from containers into drinks, according to a U.S. research team.

The finding suggests that parents sterilizing polycarbonate baby bottles by heating them in water or in a microwave may be inadvertently increasing the amount of the estrogen-mimicking chemical leaching from the containers. It also indicates hikers who use the bottles as a thermos to store hot tea or liquids may be doing the same.

The addition of boiling water increased BPA migration rates by up to 55-fold compared with water at room temperature, according to experiments run at the University of Cincinnati. A paper outlining the findings is being released today in Toxicology Letters, a peer-reviewed journal.

Spotted in Seattle -- yet another wild cat

A wild serval cat, the second one found wandering around West Seattle in the past three weeks, was on its way to Sara's Sanctuary in Redmond on Friday.

Terri Miner, the owner of the sanctuary, is working long hours to build a new enclosure. She knows what she's in for; it will be the third serval for her shelter.

The elegant cats with long legs and graceful necks look like miniature cheetahs or leopards. They come from Africa and, like other exotic animals, are illegal to own in Seattle.

"You can't put a serval with another animal. You can't put them with a dog, a cat or monkey. Everything we have on this property is prey to a serval," said Miner.

"They can jump 15 feet straight up in the air. It means quite an enclosure is needed," she said.
