Chicago Auto Show blog: A few, final thoughts

The "Si" in Honda Civic Si must stand for "steal it" based on the number of parts missing from the red coupe at McCormick Place. By Friday, the shift knob, shifter boot, cupholder cover and the ends of both steering-column stalks were gone. Wonder whether the billet-style pedals made it through the weekend? When a couple who appeared to be seriously car shopping were inspecting a Dodge Journey, the woman noticed that it had a third row of seats. "Great," said the man. "Your mother can sit back there." The Chicago Automobile Trade Association, the dealers' group that sponsors the show, had a wonderful exhibit commemorating this as the 100th show, but many of the 1.2 million or so visitors may have missed it. It was in the back of the North Hall, tucked behind the General Motors fleet and commercial display.

Neal's blog

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal." I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood. I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice. I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today! Those immortal words were spoken by Martin Luther King Jr.

Oxygen bars pop up across France

PARIS: As oxygen bars begin to pop up across France, health authorities are beginning to question the merits or otherwise of sniffing O2.

Supposed to improve health and well-being, oxygen bars date back to the late

1990s, spreading from Canada to California and to Britain and Japan, in nightclubs, health clubs, airports or even trade fairs.

But Paris' first oxygen bar opened only last week. Flagged as "a revolutionary anti-fatigue, anti-stress and anti-depression concept", the city's maiden O2 bar is housed in an up-market beauty institute owned by no less than the wife of top French publicist and political "kingmaker" Jacques Seguela.

Seguela has been very much in the news recently for bringing together President Nicolas Sarkozy and his new wife Carla Bruni around a dinner table, a coup that comes almost three decades after helping propel leftwing leader Francois Mitterrand to the country's highest public office.

Financier Pledges $1-Billion to Foundation; Main Goal Is to Promote ...

Peter G. Peterson, the private-equity titan, has announced plans to give at least $1-billion over the next several years through his newly created foundation, which will focus on calling public attention to threats to America's economic security.

Mr. Peterson, a co-founder and the senior chairman of the Blackstone Group, in New York, and a former Secretary of Commerce during the Nixon administration, said the money will come from the nearly $1.9-billion he made in June during Blackstone's initial public offering.

Mr. Peterson, who is 81, said his foundation will focus primarily on problems he says the country is facing because of the growth of federal entitlement programs, such as Medicare and Social Security; ballooning health-care costs; the increase in budget and trade deficits, low savings rates, and soaring foreign debt, all of which, Mr.

Exercise for Arthritis Patients

CHAPEL HILL -- Patients with arthritis, the country's leading cause of disability, tend to be less fit than their peers who don't have this condition. Studies have shown, however, that they can safely participate in exercise programs to increase their fitness, strength and psychosocial status and health providers recommend that arthritis patients participate in exercise.

A new study published by a University of North Carolina (UNC) researcher, published in the most recent issue of Arthritis Care and Research, evaluated the effects of the People with Arthritis Can Exercise (PACE) program to promote managing arthritis through exercise. Although pilot studies had shown that PACE, developed by the Arthritis Foundation, led to improvements for arthritis patients, this was the first randomized controlled trial to evaluate the program.
