Let us invest in health education - Yamson

Accra, Nov. 18, GNA - Mr Ishmael Yamson, Chairman of University of Ghana Council has called on corporate institutions and organisations to invest in health education to ensure the development of the required human resource base for quality health care delivery in the country. He noted that knowledge acquired by health personnel would save the lives of many Ghanaians. Mr Yamson made the call at a fund-raising dinner and awards night organised by College of Health Sciences of the University of Ghana in Accra at the weekend. It was to support its Post Graduate Endowment Fund and reward individuals, institutions and organisations that had contributed to the fund. Mr Yamson said most corporate institutions and organisations, used most of their funds to support beauty pageants and it would be appropriate to channel these funds in health education.

Hawaii's values, traditions can inspire a nation

When I set out to achieve universal health care as first lady back in 1993, I knew I needed to learn from Hawaii's pioneering example. So I traveled to your state and met with health care professionals and community leaders to discuss how Hawaii's approach to health care could be a model for America. I was greatly impressed by what I saw.

I was impressed by your passionate belief that health care is not a luxury -- but a fundamental right. I was impressed by this state's proud progressive tradition and firm commitment to caring for all its citizens. And I was impressed by Hawaii's rich cultural heritage and breathtaking natural beauty.

But I know Hawaii also faces unique challenges -- from education to energy to the economy. And the people of Hawaii deserve a president who won't just talk about solutions to those problems -- but will actually deliver.

Flushed with shame at Britain

The health service is a joke with more people dying through infection. Education standards are apalling. Crime is some of the worst in Europe, teenage pregancies ARE the worst in Europe. Drug taking is the highest in Europe. So in all, we're the best at being the worst

Legislator: Sorry for calling unmarried teen parents 'sluts'

Lorez Meinhold of the Colorado Health Foundation said shame has been shown have little impact on values and behavior. She said state leaders should focus instead on the scarcity of programs aimed at preventing teen pregnancy.

Garza Hicks said the state needs more prevention programs through schools and community groups, but she said the public must decide whether it wants to fund them.

“Sometimes it takes just a little more information, a little more education," Garza Hicks said. “And we must not give up on them either."

Extreme Makeover contest offers a ''new you''

If you live in Clay County and are looking for the "new you," the Fleming Island Extreme Makeover contest may be just the ticket.

The idea is the brainchild of Kimber Newton, owner of the Fleming Island Tanning Salon, and brings a number of professionals together in an effort to help one person make long-lasting health and beauty changes.

"This is not just a pretty makeover for someone who just wants to get their hair and nails done," Newton said. "We want someone who is really looking to make lifestyle changes."

The makeover will take place over 30 days, starting April 1, Newton said. It will include five days a week of training at a gym, nutritional education, teeth whitening, hair styling and makeup, nails and tanning services. The winner will be driven in a limo to attend a coming-out party, outfitted in a dress and jewelry supplied by a boutique.
