Female entrepreneurs needed the Initiative
A preschool in San Francisco. An Aztec restaurant in Oakland. A pest-control outfit in Vallejo. A massage studio in San Jose. These ventures, which seemingly have nothing in common, share a crucial reason for their existence: Women's Initiative for Self Employment, a Bay Area nonprofit marking its 20th anniversary this year. A microenterprise training and microlending organization, Women's Initiative has helped low-income women start or expand more than 1,600 businesses in Northern California. Guisell Osorio is one of those women. A 37-year-old immigrant from Chile, she runs Sabores Del Sur, a food and catering company that specializes in South American cuisine. "I'm surprised people say I can sell because I didn't think I could," Osorio said one morning at her weekly stand in San Francisco's Alemany Farmers' Market.

Tanzania: Blogging the Opening of a Bed Net Factory
Sharing power with a coffee urn, Kenyan blogger Bankelele reports from Arusha on the opening of factory in Arusha which will have a significant effect on the health of many Africans. There's a factory launch at the Arusha export processing zone – a joint venture between the multinational, Sumitomo Chemical, and a Tanzanian company to fight malaria. The factory will produce long-lasting treated nets to combat malaria which has been a plague to malaria-infected parts of Africa. It is expected to produce over 10 million nets this year. .
Aggressive Diabetes Therapy Lowers Death Risk, Study Finds
The study, involving more than 10,000 people, was dubbed the ACCORD (Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes) trial, and was stopped early on safety concerns after researchers found an increased risk of mortality in those whose blood sugar was aggressively managed. Although the death rates in both treatment arms of the ACCORD trial were lower than is seen in the general population, 257 people who were on therapy to get their blood sugar levels in the non-diabetic range died versus 203 people receiving standard treatment. "In the ACCORD trial we wanted to learn, does aggressive glucose lowering decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease? But, we found that in patients whose [blood sugar levels are] high, if we try to drive it to normal, there may be harm," said Dr.
Production notes
Using the basic "fast food architecture" as a template, Hotzman then forged each of the Mooby's elements -- from the giant fiber-glass cow on the rooftop to the cheesy playground in the parking lot. Ultimately, the production would spend some 20 days, most of the shoot, in the restaurant. Working closely with Smith and Holtzman was director of photography David Klein, who shot the original CLERKS and returned for a second dose. Klein had his work cut out for him as Smith threw a dizzyingly extensive 360-degree steadi-cam shot at him in the scene when Randal confronts Dante behind Mooby's. Another memorable sequence brought cast and crew to a local Go-Kart track, where Dante and Randal have an emergency race session in the middle of the workday accompanied by a Burt Bacharach love song -- a moment that seems to sum up the ineffable yearnings and inseparable friendship of their characters.
